It's been on for ages, but a surprising number of people don't know it. You don't generally see Science Fiction Comedy sit-coms.
Basically, in the future, Dave Lister works on the mining ship Red Dwarf. He breaks up with his girlfriend and is sad so he smuggles a cat on board. When he refuses to hand over Frankenstein to the authorities, he is put into suspended animation for the rest of the trip. While he's out, his direct supervisor and roommate (how's that for a combination) Rimmer is somehow put in charge of fixing a drive plate (this is the guy who mostly makes sure that the food dispensers work). Needless to say, this does not go well and everyone dies, but not for long. Holly, the ship's computer, keeps Dave in suspended animation until it is safe to come out (mind you in the meantime, the human race has died out, an entire race of cat people had evolved, had holy wars, and left the ship except for the sick and the lame, and they've gotten so far out into space that they have no idea where they are). So basically the series is Dave, Cat (descended from Frankenstein, the Holy Mother), a Hologram version of Rimmer, and later on a neurotic droid named Kryton, flying around the universe and trying not to mess up (usually unsuccessfully.)
