The basic premise is CIA operative has left the Company (even though they don't want to let him leave) and is dealing with his issues by advertising to help people in the newspaper - odds against you, call the Equalizer. He, along with friends who are still working for the Company, help people in New York with all kinds of problems from kidnappings to murder threats to living in apartments run by a slum lord.
